Wave Selective Optimiser

The SolderStar WaveShuttle PRO quickly allows you to analyse, improve and gain control of your wave soldering process.

This unique fixture incorporates two measurement systems to give the most comprehensive and repeatable measurement results of any analyser on the market today. Measurement of wave contact time, wave height, wave parallelism and temperature profile are all required to correctly setup the wave solder machine correctly, these measurements can now be captured in one single pass using this innovative and convenient device.

The WaveShuttle Pro is designed for the rigours of daily production testing, manufactured from 10mm anti-static composite and fitted with durable titanium side rails. This intelligent measurement fixture incorporates titanium contact sensors on the underside that capture wave parameters data as it moves through the solder wave, including a true measurement of wave height. Additionally the system measures preheat profiles and solder pot temperatures.

FAQs: Your Wave Selective Optimiser Questions Answered

1. What is the Wave Selective Optimiser and what is its main function?

The Optimiser is a measurement fixture (“WaveShuttle PRO”) that analyses and improves wave soldering or selective soldering performance by capturing key process parameters—wave height, contact/dwell time, wave parallelism, pre-heat & solder pot temperature—in a single pass through the soldering machine.

2. Which parameters does it measure, and why are they important?

It measures:

  • Wave contact (dwell) time (main & chip wave) – to ensure solder properly wets components.
  • Wave height / immersion depth – to control solder volume and avoid bridging.
  • Temperature profiles (pre-heat zones, solder pot, PCB top-side) – to ensure thermal consistency and avoid thermal shocks.
  • PCB to conveyor parallelism – to ensure consistent immersion and minimise defects.
3. What are the physical specifications of the fixture (size, construction)?
  • Made from 10 mm anti-static composite, fitted with durable titanium side rails.
  • Size is approximately 250 mm × 350 mm × 30 mm (Width × Length × Height).
4. How accurate and responsive are its measurements?
  • Dwell/contact time accuracy: ± 0.01 seconds.
  • Contact sensors sample at 100 times per second for each contact.
  • Temperature accuracy: ± 1 °C with resolution of 0.02 °C (though graphs may display in 0.1 °C increments).
5. Can the Wave Selective Optimiser be used with wireless telemetry / remote data capture?

Yes — there is an optional 2.4 GHz wireless telemetry module (Zigbee PRO protocol) allowing for live or near-live data transmission, so results can be collected without needing physical connection where convenient.

6. How does this device help with audit compliance, process control and yield improvement?
  • Provides documented measurement of critical wave solder process parameters for audits / ISO / customer requirements.
  • Helps reduce defects (e.g. tombstoning, insufficient solder, overheating) by giving actionable data to fine-tune presets.
  • Helps reduce energy consumption by ensuring wave height and pot temps are not over-set.
7. What are the limitations or trade-offs of using the WaveShuttle PRO?
  • It measures key parameters without PCB load; actual board mass / component layout can still affect real process performance.
  • The fixture size must match or be compatible with the lane width of the soldering machine to get representative results.
  • The protective fixture adds some thermal and mechanical mass; there can be a small effect on how representative the profile is vs a loaded PCB.
  • Wireless telemetry may have reduced performance in some solder pot / machine enclosures.
8. How is the data analysed, and what software tools are available?
  • Comes with Wave Central PC software for analysis of wave soldering parameters. It includes SPC (Statistical Process Control) charting functionality to set good/bad limits for ongoing process verification.
  • Data can be downloaded via USB or via wireless (if that option is fitted).
  • Multiple languages supported, compatibility with Windows systems.
