The Role Of Ergonomic Microscopes In Dentistry

Dental restoration demands extreme precision. For work on crowns, bridges, implants and full dentures, rework and inspection processes are critical to ensuring the correct fit, finish or colour scheme is achieved.

Inspection and Checks

There are many areas within dental technology that require magnification. These include the inspection of dies, patterns, casting for fit and passivity of spans and porcelain for cracks, chips and surface finish. The unreinforced eyesight of dental technicians is not usually sufficient to be able to produce the required quality of dental rework. It is therefore extremely important to use a magnifying device that can provide a realistic, three-dimensional image and true colour representation of the subject. Bench magnifiers are not ideal for such applications, as they don’t offer enough magnification and give off too much distortion.

Hawker Richardson have worked closely with dental practices and laboratories for over 20 years, offering best-in-class ergonomic microscopes from Vision Engineering. Dental technicians worldwide have reaped the many benefits of this range of ergonomic microscopes designed with dental rework and inspection in mind.

Vision’s Mantis range of stereo microscopes are a popular choice. Designed to suit every operator and environment, the versatile universal stand and ergonomic viewing head are a favourite amongst Dental Technicians. Generally, the Mantis Compact model, with 6x objective lens is used for general inspection work and the Mantis Elite with up to 10x magnification is used for modification. The Mantis Elite also has an interchangeable turret that allows technicians to quickly change from low to high magnification. With the option of an articulated arm, the Mantis can be quickly and easily fitted to the workbench in a laboratory.

Finished crowns can also be checked under the Mantis where colour rendition is at an optimum because of the new true light LED illumination.

Modifications and Dental Rework

It’s important in dental technology to make sure that any modifications are carried out accurately in order to prevent the loss of fit. For rework of products in the dental laboratory, a few requirements must be fulfilled by the magnifying device:

+ Good hand-eye coordination

+ Enough space between lens and object

+ Easy positioning of the magnifier over the object

+ Lens protection and dust proof

+ Ergonomic, fatigue-free operation

+ Magnification for the normal operation 4x or 6x

All these requirements are met by Vision Engineering’s Mantis Compact with universal stand. The Mantis provides ergonomic advantages, preventing eye fatigue and muscle strain, thus allowing the user to work comfortably and accurately. The large depth of field allows the work to be viewed at a greater magnification through the stereo viewer with an increased amount of the subject in focus, thus providing for a greater overall perspective when working on one specific area.

In Germany, approximately 60% of dental labs use the Mantis range from Vision Engineering. Want to learn more about Vision Microscopes in dental environments? Read our case study Dentistry Excellence at Holistic Dental Clinic Brunswick.
