Vision Engineering Mantis Elite Stereo Microscope

The Mantis Elite is a high performance stereo inspection microscope featuring patented eyepiece-less optics to reduce user fatigue and promote high-quality work. With magnification options up to 20x, the multi-award winning Mantis Elite delivers exceptional 3D imaging ideal for a wide range of applications and industries.

The Mantis Elite is a true stereo microscope, without eyepieces. Twin optical paths pass through the patented optics of the Mantis Elite, exiting the single viewing lens as separate (stereo) optical paths, just as they would with a conventional stereo microscope.

There is no magic, no electronic manipulation, just a high contrast, high resolution microscope image, without the hassle of microscope eyepieces.

Accessories
Accessories  {accord} {accordion Episcopic Illuminator} Episcopic Illuminator The episcopic illuminator provides a concentration of light through- the-lens (TTL) to illuminate the bottom and sides of component features, which would otherwise be difficult to view. With an iris feature to allow focusing of the light, the episcopic Illuminator is ideal for the inspection of complex internal/external features, such as bores, pipes, tubes, slots, holes and connectors. – Focusable, through the lens illumination. – Available with 4x, 6x, 8x and 10x objectives (6x, 8x and 10x objectives require a spacer block). {accordionend} {accordion UV/White Light Illumination} Mantis Elite UV is a variant of Vision Engineering’s Mantis Elite stereo microscope, offering clear, magnified imaging of UV fluoresced cracks, flaws and coatings. The dedicated variant incorporates switchable UV/white light illumination for the combined benefits of stereo magnification and UV inspection, making it ideal for a wide range of specialist and general UV inspection tasks. – Superb stereo vision gives unsurpassed crack and coating visibility. – Independent central switch for UV lamp. – Footswitch control for white light. {accordionend} {accordion Floating Stage} Floating Stage Mantis Compact Floating Stage 400 Provides smooth and sensitive control allowing for samples to be accurately inspected. For use with bench stand only. Sensitive controls for steady manoeuvrability {accordionend} {accordion Objective Lenses} Objective Lenses 2x, 4x, 6x, 6x SLWD (Super Long Working Distance), 8x, 10x, 15x and 20x objective lenses are available, to suit different application requirements. Mantis Elite houses two objectives in a quick rotate turret, so you can inspect at lower magnification, then switch to higher magnification for detail work. With a 112mm working distance, the 6x SLWD objective is an ideal solution for precision applications requiring both inspection and detail tasks, such as hair restoration and dental laboratory work. Disposable lens protection caps are available to protect your objective lens from damage when soldering, or in aggressive environments. {accordionend} {accordionend}

FAQs: Your Vision Engineering Mantis Elite Stereo Microscope Questions Answered

1. What magnification options are available on the Mantis Elite, and how does the quick-change turret work?

The Mantis Elite supports magnification options from 2× up to 20×, with a dual-objective (2 lenses) quick-change turret. This means you can rapidly switch between a lower magnification (for overview) and a higher magnification (for detail work) without removing or adjusting lens assemblies.

2. What working distances and fields of view (FoV) can I expect at different magnifications?

Depending on the objective lens used, working distance and FoV vary:

  • 2×: ~ 160 mm working distance with ~ 57.0 mm field of view
  • 4×: ~ 96 mm WD / ~ 34 mm FoV
  • 6×: ~ 68 mm WD / ~ 23 mm FoV
  • Highest magnifications (15×, 20×) reduce working distance significantly (e.g. ~ 29–40 mm) and FoV shrinks (to single-digit mm range) for precision detail work.
3. What kind of illumination does the Mantis Elite provide, and how well does it handle different inspection materials or contrast conditions?

The microscope includes surface illumination using 24 LEDs, delivering around 11,000 lux on the subject plane. It also supports substage (transmitted / back-lighting) illumination (58 LEDs) when using a bench stand, which is useful for transparent, perforated, or thin samples to see edges more clearly.

4. How does the eyepiece-less or “viewer” design of the Mantis Elite improve ergonomics and operator comfort?

The Mantis Elite uses patented eyepiece-less stereo optics that allow users to sit further back, maintain a more natural posture, avoid leaning, and reduce eye strain. Users can even wear glasses or eye protection without compromising the stereo view. The design also enables head movement (“Dynamic View Optics”) so operators can look “around” features by subtle movement rather than constant repositioning.

5. What stands and accessories are available to configure the Mantis Elite for different workspace setups?

There are several mounting/stand options. Common configurations include:

  • Universal Stand (moderate reach and height adjustment)
  • Bench Stand (more stable, good for tasks where sample is stationary)
  • Articulated Arm / Swing Arm (for greater reach and flexibility)
6. What are the primary use cases or industries where the Mantis Elite is especially effective?

Mantis Elite is well suited for applications requiring precision inspection, manipulation, and visual quality control, particularly where operator fatigue could reduce performance. Key industries include electronics / PCB rework, medical & dental work, watch / jewellery manufacturing, art restoration, hair restoration, aerospace / automotive component inspection, and general precision engineering.

7. What limitations or trade-offs should be considered when choosing the Mantis Elite?
  • At very high magnifications (15×, 20×), both working distance and field of view are limited; it may require precise sample positioning and strong lighting.
  • Use of high-magnification or long working distance (SLWD) lenses may exclude some other lenses (e.g. 2× or 20×) due to turret geometry constraints.
  • The bench and articulated arm stands take up space; depending on your lab layout or multiple users, you’ll need to ensure proper mounting and stability.
8. Are there imaging / documentation options (camera capture, software) associated with Mantis Elite?

Yes. The Mantis Elite has a variant (Elite-Cam HD) which integrates a high-definition USB camera for capturing images and video. The standard model provides optical viewing, but you can add digital capture via the Cam-HD or separate accessories. Accompanying software allows capture in common image formats (JPG/PNG etc.), annotation, marking up, and optional measurement / overlay tools.
