In the world of precision work, the ability to see clearly is paramount. The Vision Engineering Mantis stereo microscope offers unparalleled pure optics ensuring clarity with advanced illumination setting it apart from traditional binocular microscopes. By seamlessly integrating fit-for-task lighting options, exceptional magnification, and superior resolution, the Mantis delivers a visual 3D experience that meets the demands of modern professionals. This article explores these unique features, highlighting the benefits for operators in various professional applications.
Dynamic View Optics (DVO) for Improved Depth Perception
The Mantis stereo microscope employs Dynamic View Optics, which projects a large, high-quality 3D image directly to the user’s eyes. Mantis has an optical screen. Itās not digital ā pure optics. Like a binocular microscope, you have lenses at the bottom where you can choose the magnification, and the image appears to be on the screen but itās actually the optical image. Stereo images are two images coming together in one piece through a glass and perceived as dimensional by the viewer.
DVO technology allows for head movement while maintaining focus, providing a dynamic perspective that enables users to view subjects from different angles without repositioning the sample. This capability enhances depth perception and spatial understanding, facilitating more precise manipulation and inspection tasks.
3D depth of perception is crucial when performing tasks like reworking printed circuit boards or intricate procedures such as hair follicle preparation for hair transplants. With the Mantis 3D Microscope, you can conduct rework as if youāre seeing it naturally. Imagine seeing the tip of a soldering iron or scalpel along with a better field of view to see the entire picture. Unlike binocular microscopes, which require looking down two eyepieces to obtain a single field of view, restricting movement, the Mantis microscope optics offer unparalleled ease and precision.

Magnification and Versatility
Magnification and depth of field, work in harmony to reveal intricate details, while the generous working distance of the Mantis ensures comfort and accessibility. Resolution, the measure of the finest detail an image can display, combines with clarity to produce a sharp, precise view of your subjectācritical for any task requiring accuracy.
The Mantis stereo microscope delivers high-resolution, high-contrast optical stereo images to reveal fine details. The range offers magnification options up to 15x, with some models providing a rotating multi-lens turret for quick magnification changes. Each magnification level has a maximum working distance ranging from 100mm for a 3x to 40mm for a 15x lens. Super-long working distance lenses are available. For example, the SLWD x6 will give you 114mm working distance whereas the normal x6 gives you 68mm.

Magnification is important but how much do you need? For reworking anything above 20x will show hand tremors. The common challenge is to strike a happy medium between magnification, depth of field and working distance. The versatility of the Mantis makes it suitable for various applications, including electronics inspection, medical device manufacturing, and precision engineering.
Advanced Illumination Options for Various Applications
Clarity begins with proper illumination, and the Mantis stereo microscope excels in providing fit-for-purpose, high-quality lighting that enhances image sharpness and reduces eye strain. A ring light, for example, produces 360° flooded light but flattens the surface texture of components on a printed circuit board. If you can turn off one quadrant you can see more contrast. There are times when you need to illuminate through holes from top to bottom or both, which requires a different light source.
The Mantis range features multiple illumination modes and ensures optimal inspection conditions across a range of materials and applications. Whether you are inspecting PCBs, plastics, glass, cavities, translucent or biological subjects there is an illumination option fit for your purpose.
Dynamic 3D illumination ā Features two banks of LEDs that can be set for synchronised or independent operation. These can be individually controlled allowing the user to adjust the amount of light from each side to regulate shadow detail and provide a 3D rendering of the subject instead. This feature applies to the PIXO and ERGO while the IOTA includes intensity control.
Transmitted illumination ā The best way to illuminate and inspect transparent, translucent, or perforated objects is from the bottom. The base of the Stabila stand, which can be fitted on all models, offers a built-in sub-stage illuminator to transmit light from the bottom.
White/UV illumination ā PIXO and ERGO offer optional White/UV illumination for applications such as conformal coating validation on printed circuit boards to ensure even coverage. Users can easily change from one light to another to view the coating.
Contrast-enhancing lighting ā Some subjects need contrast to be viewed properly. Plastics, glass, biological materials and other transparent or translucent things can benefit from the Mantis adjustable contrast-enhancing base. The optional base can be fitted to all models and features an adjustable shutter, angle of illumination and intensity for greater light control. This highlights the edges and other key details of the subjects.
EPI illumination ā PIXO and ERGO offer improved EPI illumination which is ideal for inspecting component cavities, PCB through holes, internal cylinder surfaces and the bottom of holes. The episcopic illuminator sends light along the same path as the viewer improving inspection visibility.

With its perfect balance of light, magnification, and resolution, the Mantis stereo microscope goes beyond simple magnificationāit brings your subject to life, enabling you to focus on the details that matter most. From inspecting plastics to counting hair follicles or soldering PCBs, the Mantis offers a tailored configuration for every application.
