FAQs: Your SEHO PowerWave Soldering System Questions Answered

1. What board / component sizes can the PowerWave accommodate?

The PowerWave supports a wave solder width between 100–390/400 mm (≈ 3.9–15.7 in). It can handle component heights up to 140 mm (≈ 5.5 in).

2. What configurations are available for preheat zones and what difference do they make?

There are two main versions:

  • PowerWave 3.0 – 4 preheat zones, 1200 mm preheat length
  • PowerWave 4.0 – 6 preheat zones, 1800 mm preheat length
More preheat zones / longer preheat allow gentler ramp-ups, better handling of lead-free solder (which often requires higher temperature) and more uniform heating of high-mass boards.
3. What is the conveyor speed and angle, and how do these affect throughput and solder quality?
  • Conveyor speed range is 0.5-2.5 m/min.
  • Conveyor angle is fixed to 7° in the PowerWave.
A higher speed increases throughput but may risk poor soldering (insufficient wetting, bridging) if preheat or solder wave isn’t tuned. The 7° angle is typical to promote good solder flow and peel-off.
4. What are the power / electrical & exhaust requirements?
  • PowerWave 3.0: approx. 23-31 kW depending on load.
  • PowerWave 4.0: approx. 29-44 kW with its larger preheat zone.
  • Exhaust for both versions: 2 × 1350 m³/h at 12 mbar negative pressure.
  • Standard supply voltages: 230/400 V or 240/450 V (other voltages upon request).
5. Can the PowerWave system handle both leaded and lead-free soldering?

Yes. The system is designed for both lead containing (SnPb) and lead-free processes. It offers options like nitrogen inertion of the solder wave to help with reflow and wetting in lead-free alloys.

6. What fluxing, preheating, and solder nozzle options are available?
  • Fluxer area uses an ATS spray fluxer with HVLP technology, giving precise flux deposition and cost savings.
  • Preheating area is powerful and variable; it may include convection, infrared, quartz heating modules depending on configuration.
  • Solder nozzle options include single or dual solder nozzles, with configurable soldering area suited for different assembly (SMT, THT) and alloys.
7. What are the footprint and space requirements, and how does the machine integrate into production lines?
  • Dimensions:
    • PowerWave 3.0: ~ 2980 × 1300 mm
    • PowerWave 4.0: ~ 4140 × 1300 mm
  • The PowerWave is modular, meaning it can be tailored to existing lines (e.g. conveyor systems, board feeders) and integrated into fully automated lines.
8. What are the trade-offs or considerations when choosing the PowerWave?
  • Energy consumption is significant, especially for the larger version (PowerWave 4.0). Users need to ensure their facilities can provide the required power and exhaust.
  • The large preheat zones take up floor space and require good temperature stability to avoid hotspots.
  • Maintenance-intensive parts include the fluxer, nozzles, and wave pots (especially when using lead-free alloys which increase dross).
  • Changeover between different soldering alloys or board types requires time and tuning of preheat, flux, and wave settings to maintain compliance and quality.
9. Does Hawker Richardson supply and support the SEHO PowerWave in Australia and New Zealand?
