How do you improve THE world-leading MANTIS stereo microscope trusted by thousands of customers worldwide? The 3rd generation of MANTIS from Vision Engineering pushes the bar even higher and widens its competitive advantage. A completely new model, with three different variations, the PIXO, ERGO, and IOTA deliver further advancements for a wide range of magnification applications. Compare the Mantis new generation with previous models below.
Mantis now features 5 different illumination modes for maximum control over lighting your subject to achieve shadow-free inspection and manipulation of objects. Whether you are inspecting PCBs, plastics, glass, cavities, translucent or biological subjects there is an illumination option fit for your purpose.
Dynamic 3D illumination ā Features two banks of LEDs which can be set for synchronised or independent operation. These can be individually controlled allowing the user to adjust the amount of light from each side to control shadow detail and provide – 3D rendering of the subject. This feature applies to the PIXO and ERGO while the IOTA has intensity control.
Transmitted illumination ā The best way to illuminate and inspect transparent, translucent, or perforated objects is from the bottom. The base of the Stabila stand, which can be fitted on all models, offers a built-in sub-stage illuminator to transmit light from the bottom.
White/UV illumination – PIXO and ERGO offer optional White/UV illumination for applications such as conformal coating validation on printed circuit boards to ensure even coverage. Users can easily change from one light to another to view the coating.
Contrast-enhancing lighting ā Some subjects need contrast to be viewed properly. Plastics, glass, biological materials and other transparent or translucent things can benefit from the Mantis adjustable contrast-enhancing base.Ā The optional base applies to all models and features an adjustable shutter, angle of illumination and intensity for greater light control. This highlights the edges and other key details of the subjects.
EPI illumination ā PIXO and ERGO offer improved EPI illumination which is ideal for inspecting component cavities, internal cylinder surfaces and the bottom of holes. The episcopic illuminator sends light along the same path as the viewer improving inspection visibility.
With the new generation, the field of view is also 10% larger for far better control over your movements when working under the system. The clear image enables the operator to have free head movement from side to side to view the subject instead of only straight down.
This ādynamic viewā sets the PIXO, ERGO and IOTA apart from traditional microscopes as the subject can be examined from the side providing more information and depth perception. Click image below to see how the “dynamic view” optics work.
The PIXOās integrated high-definition 5MP digital camera optical images are far superior to the 2MP capabilities of the superseded Mantis Elite CAM HD.
With high-quality images, greater colour reproduction (12-bit colour depth) and a faster frame rate of 48 fps, the PIXO delivers a greater visual outcome.Ā The standard ViCapture software enables you to capture, review and share images and annotations in real time which is great for traceability, training, and collaboration.Ā Add digital overlays to compare live images with targets, measures, or pre-set guides. There are other optional software upgrades to choose from.

The PIXO and ERGO now offer the rotating 3-lens turret for three different magnifications of your subject.Ā You can attach three different objectives suitable for your application and scroll through magnifications easily to get the best view and increase productivity with magnifications up to 15x.
The multi-turret lens fixture is perfect for performance-critical microwork like PCB soldering and inspection.Ā A quick change of magnification allows the user to take full advantage of the long-distance required when the maximum working distance is required.

A final improvement is the simplified two-model stands which accommodate all models.
The Stabila replaces the bench stand and offers a long range of improved focus travel from 55mm focus to 150mm. Stable and counter sprung for ease of use, the stand can be fitted with an optional illuminated base or the pilot stage with auto-lock to prevent unwanted travel.
The Verso swaps out the classic articulated arm with ālift and lowerā functionality enabling the Mantis to be swung in and out of position as required. With the optional forearm extension, the maximum reach has increased from 640 to 755mm with a pivot point – rotation of 270°.

Product enhancements aim to enrich the user experience and improve efficiency. Ā The Mantis new generation stereo microscope evolution continues to deliver in spades. Trusted to produce high-quality images for a wide range of applications, the world-leading stereo microscope has improved core functionality.
