The Nutek Multi Function Cage-Type Buffer is a multi-level PCB buffering system designed for SMT/PCB assembly lines, using metal support-bar “cages” and durable roller conveyors (so no belts to replace) to hold boards between machines. It supports multiple operating modes — including FIFO (First-In-First-Out), LIFO (Last-In-First-Out) and pass-through — and features smooth, leadscrew-driven width adjustment, a “soft-touch” LED control panel, precise indexing via frequency-inverter control and a compact footprint that integrates easily via the standard SMEMA interface. This makes it ideal for mixed-model or high-mix production lines where PCB flow must be balanced between pick-and-place, reflow, inspection or other SMT machines.

A multi-function cage-type buffer temporarily stores PCBs between SMT processes to decouple machines, absorb cycle-time variations, and maintain stable line throughput. It prevents upstream stoppages when downstream equipment slows or stops, improving overall line efficiency.
The buffer automatically accumulates or releases PCBs using indexed cage positions, allowing continuous upstream operation during downstream delays. This controlled buffering minimises line starvation and blocking in high-speed SMT production.
The system supports FIFO, LIFO, pass-through, and accumulation modes. FIFO is used for traceability-critical processes, LIFO for space-efficient buffering, pass-through for normal operation, and accumulation during temporary downstream stoppages.
The cage-type buffer is designed to handle a wide range of PCB lengths, widths, and thicknesses, making it suitable for high-mix, low-volume and high-mix, high-volume SMT manufacturing with varying board profiles.
The roller-based cage design eliminates belts and associated wear, reducing maintenance requirements and downtime. Independent rollers provide smooth PCB transport, lowering the risk of board scuffing, misalignment, or edge damage.
The buffer integrates via standard SMEMA interfaces, enabling seamless communication with upstream and downstream machines. SMEMA signals control board availability, transfer confirmation, and indexing to ensure synchronised and collision-free PCB handling.
Board width adjustment is designed for fast changeovers, with manual or motorised adjustment options depending on configuration. This allows rapid setup changes when switching between PCB formats in high-mix SMT lines.
The buffer includes safety interlocks, emergency stop circuits, enclosed guarding, and a user-friendly control interface with LED status indicators. These features ensure safe operation and reliable performance in continuous SMT production environments.
