Hair Doctors is utilising the Mantis Microscope to inspect hair grafts because it delivers unparalleled ergonomic advantages compared to more traditional microscopes with eyepieces. Ergonomics is fundamental when inspecting anything over a prolonged period.
Hair Doctors is one of Sydneyās top Hair Transplant clinics located at Bondi Junction. Although Hair Doctors is in Sydney, their customers come from all states and territories, including a few customers from New Zealand and New Caledonia.
Investing in a Mantis Microscope from Vision Engineering for inspecting hair follicles, Hair Doctors negate the risk of an unnatural looking hair graft by ensuring the exact follicles obtained for each graft is determined. This allows the doctors to organise and sort the hair grafts for placement accuracy.
Originally, Hair Doctors were utilising a bench magnifier and although this provided them with the magnification required, the ergonomics of the bent over the system did not provide the comfort required for such a delicate task. With something as important as hair restoration, precision is critical and users don’t want to be distracted by the pain and discomfort of using traditional binocular microscopes or bench magnifiers, where they are either bent over and / or must precisely align their eyes, often causing eye fatigue.
Dr. Ossman from Hair Doctors explains what they were using before investing in a Mantis Microscope.
“We were using strong magnifiers which were good, but the Mantis is the next level in terms of technology. It produces a clear and large field that contains crisp/sharp images of the grafts, ensuring we categorise grafts better than most clinics in Australia, which still use rudimentary technology and some only the naked eye!”.
“Ergonomics was key when considering what inspection solution to invest in, the Mantis has no eyepiece so we feel there is minimal eye fatigue when using this apparatus”.
Unique ‘Eyepieceless’ Technology
The Mantis Microscope is a unique inspection system that benefits from eyepieceless technology. Instead of the binocular eyepieces that you might find on a traditional laboratory microscope, the Mantis patented viewer has a single viewing head so users do not have to precisely align their eyes, giving them greater freedom of head movement and allowing them to keep their head and neck straight.Ā With greater comfort, users can see an increase in both accuracy and productivity.
Mantis Microscope Options
Like most magnification systems, the Mantis Microscope can be configured with various magnification lenses, stands and accessories.Ā The Hair Doctors opted for Mantis Compact with a Universal Stand and 6x and 8x magnification lenses. Utilising the Universal Stand ensures users can swing the head away from their working area when it’s not utilised, allowing maximum working space when required. Mantis Elite provides up to 20x magnification but 8x is usually more than enough magnification for inspection tasks, especially where users need to leverage some working distance.
Dr. Ossman from Hair Doctors explains how the Mantis Microscope’s ergonomic advantage helps with critical tasks involved in hair restoration.

Procedural Benefits
Up to 2200 grafts are harvested per daily session at the clinic with some large procedures taking two days for cases around the 3500 grafts. Doing large procedures over two days ensures the best graft survivability. This is where the Mantis comes into its own and the ergonomics of the viewing head rather than eyepieces makes a big difference.
As well as ergonomic advantages, the long working distance and wide field of view help to maximise the working area in both the horizontal and vertical planes, when users are looking at the grafts under magnification.
Dr. Ossman explains how utilising the Mantis Microscope has helped their processes.
“Better quality checks on the grafts that are harvested. More comfortable knowing the right number of hairs on grafts there leading to more natural hairlines where number of hairs per graft placement matters”.
It is clear the Mantis Microscope has some clear benefits, especially where precision is key such as hair restoration. If you think your business could benefit from a Mantis Microscope, contact Hawker Richardson for a demonstration or take a look at our online demonstration here.
